Prohibited Hold called at Fargo - Please Clarify 1 Year, 6 Months agoKarma: 6
Wrestler "A" is on bottom, Wrestler "B" was on top. Wrestler "B" throws in leg hooks to flatten out Wrestler "A," and in the process is riding high on the back of Wrestler "A." Wrestler "A" reaches up grabs on to the back of the head of Wrestler "B" to attempt to either flip Wrestler "B" forward or to lay back and pin Wrestler "B." This move was attempted successfully twice during AZ/USA Wrestling Freestyle season. The move was called a prohibited move and Wrestler "A" was penalized a point at Fargo. What the heck happened? Is this in fact a move not allowed in freestyle? Was it a bad call by the Fargo Ref? Please clarify. Thank you.

Just to clarify, Wrestler "A" did very clearly reach back with both hands, one grabbing behind the neck/head of Wrestler "B" and the other on the shoulder/trap area of Wrestler "B." I know in folkstyle its a no-brainer defense to leg-rider riding high, but what are the specifics of that rule for freestyle. You can't use both hands period, or you can't use both hands behind the head/neck? Upon reevaluation of our video, it is clear both hands were NOT on the head/neck. Thanks.

As far as the rule goes, two hands on the head are never allowed in freestyle/greco. This goes for the offensive or defensive wrestler.

As to your video evaluation, this is official's judgement that the defensive wrestler was commiting a foul. This can be challenged with the Chairman (if no video review is available), and if the Chairman feels that a flagarant violation/misapplication of the rules has occurred, (s)he may call a conference and relay the outcome to you.

If there is video review, it might be prudent to challenge if it was clear, in the coaches opinion, a foul did not occur, because this gives the officiating crew the ability to re-evaluate the situation and change their score, if they wish. However, as a coaching tactic, keep in mind the position of the camera...it may not be in the most favourable position to see the action your way...

As has been mentioned previously, any time a wrestler puts two hands on his opponent's head/neck, it is illegal upon application. If the referee sees it in the scenario that you describe, he will point to it right away and call it. One hand on shoulder and one on head is OK. If that 2nd hand does so much as touch the head, it is usually called at any level.

As for your specific situation, I would have to see it to comment further.
