Phoenix- - there is a new youth wrestling national tournament coming to the Valley of the Sun. The staff at Grand Canyon University is organizing the first ever Great Southwest Nationals wrestling tournament.
The kickoff event will take place April 7th and 8th at the brand new 40 million dollar GCU Arena. The folkstyle tournament will be open to ages 8-18 as well as provide an open division for 18 and over. Tournament director and Head Coach at GCU R.C. LaHaye said “This will be a major national tournament that we will run every spring, there is no reason that the city of phoenix should not be hosting an event like this.” The tournament will run 9 mats for the first year and will expect to grow in the future. LaHaye expects between 800-1000 wrestlers from the entire southwestern part on the nation to attend this spring. “I have already been in contact with several coaches throughout the country that plan on sending a ton of kids, add that to the local Arizona athletes that should attend and we will have a great event”.
