Grand Canyon’s wrestling team made an impressive 2011-12 debut at the Roadrunner Open hosted by Division I CSU Bakersfield Saturday.

The Antelopes, ranked No. 5 in NCAA Division II, led all schools --  including three nationally-ranked Division I teams -- with three champions.

Returning All-American Ted Bristol defeated Anthony Box of Cal State Bakersfield 9-7 to take the 157-class title. By fall at the 6:59 mark, Celic Bell defeated Ryan Smith of Cal Poly to earn the 197-class crown and Jordan Johnson edged California Baptist’s Charles Merrill 4-3 to bring home the top prize in the 285-class.

Kyle McCrite was runner-up at 125, falling 6-3 to Tyler Iwamura of CSU Bakersfield. Brett Sanchez was second at 184, dropping a tough 9-8 decision to American’s Troy Goodban.

“Our team battled well today, all five of our finalists wrestled well and our young guys battled hard, too,” said GCU coach R.C. LaHaye. “We are very excited about this season and our team.”

Wrestling unattached Andy Rico was fourth at 157.

When the ’Lopes return home they will be preparing for the annual dual meet with Arizona State. GCU and ASU grapple Nov. 13 at 2 p.m. in Tempe at Wells Fargo Arena. A pre-match GCU tailgate party will begin at noon.
