The Grand Canyon University wrestling team knocked off defending Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference champion and No. 6-ranked Western State tonight at Antelope Gymnasium in Phoenix. The win was over the highest-ranked Division II opponent in the three-year history of the GCU program. Western State is the alma mater of Head Coach R.C. LaHaye.
The Antelopes defeated the No. 2-ranked NAIA team in the country, California Baptist University, and another RMAC rival that defeated the No. 10-ranked NCAA Division II team in the country (Adams State) last week, Colorado State University-Pueblo, yesterday.
After winning three duals in two days, the GCU grapplers are on a roll. The ‘Lopes got big pins tonight from freshman Madison Gambrell (Clovis, CA/Clovis), redshirt sophomore Victor Carazo (pictured, Modesto, CA/Modesto Junior College) and junior Ryan Becerra (Gilbert, AZ/Cal State Bakersfield).
The team’s three stars, junior Todd Wilcox (Sacramento, CA/Sierra College), redshirt senior Stephen Towne (Phoenix, AZ/Menlo College) and Carazo, each went 3-0 on the weekend.

125 pounds -- Gambrell by fall over Kyle O’Brian
133 pounds -- Wilcox won 5-2 decision over Darren Hockett
141 pounds -- Freshman Kyle Wilson (Wasilla, AK/Colony HS) lost 11-10 decision to Hollan Gravely
149 pounds -- Redshirt junior Daniel Rubio (Phoenix, AZ/Phoenix College) lost 13-6 decision to Caleb Locker
157 pounds -- Towne won 6-5 decision over Justin Keys
165 pounds -- Carazo won by fall over Cody Frankum at 2:01
174 pounds -- Redshirt senior Daniel Garay (Los Angeles, CA/Mount Sac College) lost 6-1 decision to Zach Frazier
184 pounds -- Becerra won by fall over Kyle Francis at 2:01
197 pounds -- Sophomore Kevin Treftz (Sierra Vista, AZ/Buena) lost by fall to Donovan Mcmahill at 1:01
285 pounds -- Redshirt junior Richard Hernandez (Tempe, AZ/Briar Cliff) lost 5-2 decision to Charlie Alexander
